Course Registration

Course Registration

What is on this page:

Course registration is the process of notifying the university of the courses that you want to take: a step that represents the starting line for formulating and advancing your academic plan. Each TIU student is responsible for completing the course registration process on POTI by the set deadline.

Given how crucial course registration is, a student who fails to register for classes within the designated time frame may end up having to repeat a class or an entire year of school. A mistake in the course registration process, meanwhile, might end up invalidating the corresponding student's academic performance in a class and consequently hold the student back.

Detailed instructions for the course registration process will be available on POTI prior to each semester’s registration period.

Please make sure to carefully review them during course registration.

1. Course Registration Process

1.1 Course Registration Period

The Course Registration Period is a period of several days during which students may register their courses online on POTI. It is held during the orientation period, before the start of classes. To confirm the dates, please refer to the academic calendar.

During this period, the registration is conducted on a selection-based, and is NOT on first-come, first-served. Registering early does not provide any advantage in the selection process.

New students are strongly encouraged to start their registration after attending the Academic Guidance.

Step 1

Attend orientation sessions (guidance sessions for new students, etc.) and receive schedule information.

Step 2

Consult with your Academic Adviser before registering for courses, ideally during the AA counseling session.

Step 3

Register your courses on POTI during the Course Registration Period. Please refer to the following video for detailed instructions.

  • Register carefully and correctly, always checking for possible mistakes.

  • Be sure to print out or take a screenshot of your registration information.

  • Be sure to finalize your registration before the deadline!

  • You can cancel/change your registration within the registration period if necessary.

Step 4

Complete the registration process.

1.2 Add and Drop Period

The Add and Drop Period corresponds with the first week of classes. During this period students may make changes to their prior course registration on POTI.

During this period, adding courses will be done on a first-come, first-served basis.

Details of the Add/Drop procedures will be announced on POTI prior to each semester’s Add/Drop period.

Please make sure to carefully check any announcements.

Step 1

Add or drop courses (if necessary) on POTI.

Step 2

Complete the add and drop process.

  • If you made any changes, be sure to finalize your registration before the deadline!

  • Be sure to print out or take a screenshot of the finalized registration information.

  • You can add / drop courses during the add and drop period, but not after.

2. Maximum number of credits per semester

There are limits on the number of credits you can register for each semester. Working together with your academic adviser, you should create your optimal four-year course plan based on the requirements for maintaining your scholarships and other conditions.

  1. The above restrictions do not apply to third-year students taking required credits under the provisions of Early Graduation.

  2. The above restrictions apply when a student retakes the course(s) he/she once failed or when a student takes a course in other schools/departments at TIU.

  3. The number of credits obtained for the Undergraduate Thesis course, intensive course offered during summer or spring recess periods, courses in an international-education program, off campus programs, Overseas Seminar Program, or Teacher Training Courses is not included in the credit limits described above. (The Teacher Training Course is a program for obtaining a teacher's license required by Japanese junior high schools and high schools. Thus, all courses in the program are taught in Japanese. For more information, contact the E-Track Academic Affairs Office.)

3. Restrictions regarding course registrations

Note that students CANNOT register for:

  1. Two or more courses that are scheduled at the same time

  2. A course for which the student has already obtained credit

  3. Two or more courses that have the same name

  4. A course whose enrollment year is higher than the current year of the student.

  5. English skills courses provided for Japanese students (foreign language courses that are English language courses for Japanese students whose medium of instruction is not English).

  6. Foreign language courses that are for the same language as the students native language.

  7. Courses in other schools or departments with the same course name as courses offered in E-Track, regardless of the language it is offered in.
